‘Safest Volvo car to ever hit the road’: Next-gen EX90 electric SUV reveal in November

Volvo is all set to reveal its all-new flagship electric SUV the EX90 on November 9, 2022. The EX90 will mark the arrival of a new generation of vehicles from the automaker with latest safety technologies. The flagship EV will feature LiDAR and driver understanding systems to reduce severe accidents by up to 20 percent. Here is what we know about the EX90 so far.
The EX90 will feature Volvo’s latest Autonomous Drive technology armed with advanced sensors and in-house developed software. Many of the features in the EX90 will become standard over time.
LiDAR:
Light Detection and Ranging (LiDAR) is the first major highlight in the EX90. The remote sensing technology uses laser pulses to scope the car’s surroundings, it can detect pedestrians at up to 250 metres and small objects up to 120 metres ahead, at highway speeds. The LiDAR tech will be embedded in the roofline of the EX90 and will detect and assist the driver in different hazardous scenarios.

Joachim de Verdier, Head of Safe Vehicle Automation at Volvo Cars, says, “We believe the EX90 to be the safest Volvo car to ever hit the road, we are fusing our understanding of the outside environment with our more detailed understanding of driver attention. When all our safety systems, sensors, software and computing power come together, they create a preventative shield of safety around you – and you won’t even know it’s there until you need it.”
Driver Understanding System:
The EX90 will also debut Volvo’s driver understanding system. It uses two-cameras inside the cabin to monitor driver behaviour and alert in emergency situations. It can detect if the driver is not paying attention or has left control of the steering. The system will first put out warning signals and if the driver fails to respond, the EX90 is also capable of safely stopping on the side of the road by itself.
