F1 2022: Verstappen takes first ever win at Monza as Italian GP proves unlucky for Ferrari

Round 16 of the 2022 Formula 1 season came from Monza, Italy – the home of Scuderia Ferrari. A host of drivers including Max Verstappen, Lewis Hamilton, Carlos Sainz, Sergio Perez etc received grid penalties for the 2022 Italian Grand Prix, with Charles Leclerc starting the race from pole position ahead of George Russell and Lando Norris.
Current championship leader Max Verstappen started the race from P7, but his Red Bull’s straight line pace and soft rubber helped him gain 5 positions in just 5 laps, with only Charles Leclerc ahead of him. Meanwhile the other Red Bull Racing driver Checo Perez dropped to the last position after overheating of brakes led him to make a pit stop on Lap 9.
Sebastian Vettel’s race ended soon after due to a power unit failure, resulting in the deployment of a virtual safety car. This helped Charles Leclerc make a quick pit stop, switching to Medium compound tyres. Meanwhile Fernando Alonso, Vettel’s teammate Lance Stroll, and Daniel Ricciardo also had to retire their respective cars.
Take a look at all the point scorers at the 2022 Italian Grand Prix:
